Description

The monument comprises the remains of two complex settlements and field systems of the Iron Age, some 2000 to 2500 years old. The eastern comprises three well-defined circular house stances (17m-19m in diameter), two enclosures, a souterrain, and a field system of clearance heaps and field walls. The western, partly excavated in 1903, comprises six circular house stances (c 15m-18m in diameter), two souterrains and a field system of clearance heaps and field walls.

The area to be scheduled measures a maximum of 965m WNW-ESE by 320m transversely, to include the settlements and field systems, and an area around and between the visible remains, where traces of activity associated with the use of the settlements and field systems will survive, as marked in red on the attached map. Modern field boundaries and tracks are specifically excluded from the scheduling.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a pair of well preserved settlements and field systems which have the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of prehistoric settlement and agriculture. The monuments are of particular importance because of their well defined field characteristics and because of the survival in the area of other, broadly contemporary, settlements and field system; the comparison of these probably related sites could considerably increase our knowledge of the organisation and development of the prehistoric landscape.
